A MESSAGE FROM BELOW

THE FLOOR BELOW ORDINARY.

Follow the purple light past the last sensible door. Otto Grotto has made himself comfortable beneath the building, surrounded by velvet, stone and possessions with increasingly complicated backstories. The robe is leopard. The slippers are loud. The person who suggested more daylight has not been invited to move the furniture.

He took the basement personally.

The room was supposed to hold a boiler and some unwanted chairs. Otto saw potential in the acoustics. He brought a sofa down the stairs, introduced a lamp to the corner and began describing the exposed stone as an architectural decision. Years of imaginary domestic improvements have produced the Grotto: a subterranean living room with the confidence of a penthouse and an extraordinary number of small objects. Otto lives in this fictional place exactly as his enormous hair suggests he would. He keeps odd hours, remembers every compliment and believes a possession becomes interesting as soon as you refuse to explain where it came from.

The room remembers a compliment.

Edda once stood by the back wall and said the place looked lovely. The stone repeated the last word with remarkable warmth. Otto stopped rearranging things immediately. He has spent several evenings finding the exact position from which the echo works best, marking it with a slipper until somebody moved the slipper. Now visitors receive a little guidance about where to stand. Edda says she was mainly referring to the lamp. Otto prefers the room's version of events and has forbidden anyone to put a bookcase against that wall.

EDDA'S VERSION IS AVAILABLE UPSTAIRS.

Marcel has nothing to add.

Marcel is a ceramic frog with a chipped green elbow and an expression Otto finds unnecessarily informed. Their disagreement began over the position of a cushion. Otto presented his case at length. Marcel maintained the same face. Since then, the frog has been moved to a shelf where he can see the sofa but cannot, according to Otto, influence the conversation. Guests sometimes turn Marcel slightly towards the wall. Otto turns him back. A dispute of this importance should at least be conducted with everybody facing the right direction.

A REPLY IS NOT EXPECTED.
OVERHEARD / 03

Upstairs would like an update.

The rotary telephone has one working extension, and it reaches the flat above. Pippa calls occasionally to ask whether Otto has heard the rain begin. He listens to the pipes, considers the temperature of the stairwell and supplies an answer with several qualifications. Pippa could open a window. Otto could ask why she doesn't. Neither finds that arrangement as satisfying. The calls have expanded to include corridor gossip and the progress of a parcel containing a lampshade. The lampshade has now been discussed for longer than it spent in transit.

DO NOT DISTURB THE EXTENSION.
PLEASE MIND THE SHELVES

Objects with unreasonable biographies.

Otto's cabinet contains four things he considers essential to the atmosphere. Choose an object and read the account he has permitted us to publish. The labels were written under supervision. The valuations were removed because they mostly involved memories of lunches. Please return every object to approximately the same place; Marcel notices small changes.

Marcel, the resident objection.

Found beside a stack of old crockery, acquired for reasons Otto now describes as obvious. Marcel has attended every rearrangement of the room and approved none of them aloud. The chipped elbow is said to be a sporting injury, although nobody has established which sport requires quite this much sitting.

OTTO'S FINAL WORD

Holds an opinion. Offers no supporting material.

LATER, IN THE SAME BASEMENTDINNER IS AN ARRANGEMENT.

PLEASE LEAVE THAT CHAIR EXACTLY WHERE IT IS.

Supper for one. Seating for several.

Around the hour when upstairs starts looking for charging cables, Otto puts a small bowl of olives on the table. He moves three chairs into positions he feels improve the composition. One catches the lamp. Another balances the painting. The third has been there since a conversation he enjoyed and is staying until the memory loses its shape. Dinner proceeds at a generous pace. A plate is occasionally moved just to hear the stone answer. Otto calls this a quiet evening. The room, which has received more attention than most restaurants, appears pleased with the arrangement.

NOTICES FROM THE LANDING
NOTICE / 01

Found: one mysterious key.

Brass, heavy, opens nothing we have tried. Otto says identifying the lock would reduce its possibilities. The key remains on the noticeboard, where it has become an effective reason to begin telling a story about somewhere else.

NOTICE / 02

The lamp is already perfect.

Suggestions concerning brightness should be delivered in writing and left beneath Marcel. Otto will consider them when the present bulb has finished making its point. Nobody is authorised to introduce overhead lighting during a conversation.

NOTICE / 03

Please explain the postcard.

A postcard arrived showing a town Otto claims never to have visited. The handwriting knows a surprising amount about the sofa. Replies are being drafted in increasingly large letters. He would like the sender to clarify whether the criticism was affectionate.

THINGS OTTO HAS MENTIONED DOING

Plans from
below.

The next editions of this peculiar little world.

DOWNSTAIRS NOTE / 0101

Paste up the first edition.

Give Otto's world a recognisable beginning through the opening artwork, character portrait and downstairs stories. Establish the visual details that matter: the enormous hair, heavy moustache, leopard robe and objects that keep interrupting the narrative. Add the project links and token details.

WHAT ARRIVED

Opening artwork, character references and the first downstairs dispatches.

DONE
DOWNSTAIRS NOTE / 0202

Let the cupboard spill out.

Turn the cabinet's inhabitants into reusable illustrations, cutouts, caption sheets and printable-style poster layouts. Give Marcel several subtly different ways to look unimpressed. Include isolated props so people can place Otto's possessions in new situations without needing to redraw the entire room. Package the material with clear filenames and examples, leaving plenty of space for stranger ideas than the originals.

WHAT ARRIVES

Prop collection, expression sheets and a downloadable collage kit.

PLANNED
DOWNSTAIRS NOTE / 0303

Answer the downstairs post.

Invite the community to send the Grotto something worth discussing: a dubious postcard, an unexplained object or a short account of what happened above the ceiling. Publish selected creations with their makers credited. Use these contributions to introduce recurring neighbours and unexpected visitors, keeping each new story attached to a concrete detail that people can remember and play with.

WHAT ARRIVES

Community correspondence, credited guest stories and new recurring objects.

PLANNED
DOWNSTAIRS NOTE / 0404

Knock through to somewhere stranger.

Expand the fictional home with further illustrated corners and small browser interactions. A visitor might arrange an impossible shelf, change the room's disputed lighting or assemble a postcard for Otto to misunderstand. Develop each addition around a good joke and a finished visual idea. These releases are planned; their order can change as the Grotto acquires better reasons to need another room.

WHAT ARRIVES

Additional room scenes, interactive curiosities and new poster editions.

PLANNED

Notes 02 to 04 are planned creative releases. The order can change as new ideas arrive.

THE PART TO KEEP

The name on the door.

Otto's official project details live on this label: ticker, network, supply, status and the complete contract address. Check any address you are given against this one. Keep this part of the wall handy; the rest of the room is liable to rearrange itself.

A few things
people ask.

OTTO HAS
THOUGHT ABOUT IT.
Is Otto actually living down there?

Otto and the Grotto are an original fictional character and setting. The basement supplies the scenery for his peculiar domestic life: long conversations, small collections and a room that seems to remember everything. This is a meme project built around that world, with room for illustrated stories and other people's additions to the lore.

Why is Marcel so important?

Every household needs someone who can sit through an explanation without interrupting. Marcel has turned that ability into a considerable position of influence. Whether the frog agrees with Otto is deliberately unresolved. The interesting part is how much effort Otto puts into answering an objection that nobody else has heard.

Can I add something to the Grotto?

Make a poster, invent an upstairs neighbour or give an ordinary object an unnecessarily eventful history. Use the project's X channel to show your work, making clear which parts you have invented yourself. The planned collage kit will supply reusable material. A specific little detail will fit this household better than a caption that could belong to anyone.

Where do the buttons lead?

The Pump.fun buttons open the $OTTO coin page, and the X buttons open @ottoogrotto. The contract label shows the full address with a copy button. If an address you see elsewhere doesn't match it, it isn't Otto's.

END OF THE DOWNSTAIRS EDITION

COME DOWN. BRING A STORY.

Otto has moved a lamp, found another cushion and remembered something about the postcard that changes his entire interpretation. There is room beside the sofa if you can persuade the geode to share its light. Bring an object with an implausible past or a very ordinary story told with conviction. The stairs are where they were. Everything else is under discussion.

YOU KNOW
WHERE TO FIND HIM.
